Turkish rebar producer Izmir Demir Celik (IDC) has announced that it has decided to suspend its profile re-rolling mill and steel mill. The producer expects a daily output loss of 3,900 mt at its steel mill, while the fall in output at the profile re-rolling plant will be approximately 800 mt. IDC added that it is working on plans to compensate for this output loss in the future when the impact of the Covid-19 virus eases and market conditions improve.
Emphasizing the importance of its workers’ health, the Izmir-based mill indicated that it anticipates no job losses, adding that after determining the number of workers to be made inactive, the firm will apply for the government’s reduced-time working subvention. “We will continue to make daily evaluations in this dynamic period to ensure the continuity of our operations and the good health of our workers,” said the steelmaker in its announcement, adding that it will continue to take action within its perceptions of social responsibility as it continues to share these decisions with the public.
On March 24, IDC had reported that it reduced shifts at its bar rolling plant and decided to keep minimum staff during the ongoing operations amid precautions taken to reduce the impact of the coronavirus. IDC was expecting its loss of production per day to reach around 1,100 mt as a result of this decision. Meanwhile on April 1, it had temporarily suspended production at its bar rolling plant which has a 900,000 mt per year production capacity amid precautions taken to reduce the impact of the virus.
