Tonghua Steel breaks ground for Jilin production base

On May 15, Jilin Province-based Tonghua Iron & Steel (Group) Ltd held a foundation stone laying ceremony for its Jilin production base project, which is scheduled to begin production operations in September 2009.

The new production base will have a designed annual capacity of 1.5 million mt of crude steel, 1.476 million mt of HR coils and strips, and 600,000 mt of first-grade metallurgical coke. The total investment for this project is RMB 5.64 billion ($810 million).

With the addition of this new capacity, Tonghua Iron and Steel's overall annual steel production capacity will exceed 10 million.
