Thyssenkrupp Steel orders DRI plant for decarbonization efforts

German plantmaker SMS Group has announced that it will supply a direct reduction plant worth €1.8 billion to Germany-based steelmaker Thyssenkrupp Steel’s Duisburg plant.

The plant, which will have an annual production capacity of 2.5 million mt of direct reduced iron (DRI), is scheduled to start-up by the end of 2026.

The order is part of the one of the biggest industrial decarbonization projects worldwide, which at one stroke will reduce annual carbon emissions by 3.5 million mt in the future.

Thyssenkrupp Steel plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045 at the latest.
