South American sources say that Ternium Sidor, Venezuela's largest steelmaker, was hit by a strike last week. The union had organized the strike as a “warning,” and the work stoppage was to last from Thursday, October 19 to Saturday, October 21. But as of Tuesday, October 24, the strike was still on. The steelworkers are striking in order to pressure management to increase their compensation. Last month, workers at the plant engaged in slowdown in order to protest the lull in negotiations for a new labor contract. Ternium Sidor, located in the city of Puerto Ordaz in southern Venezuela, is owned by the Ternium, which also owns Siderar in Argentina and Hysla in Mexico. Ternium is part of the Techint Group, which includes over 100 smaller companies.
