Delays in steel shipments for the Windsor Assembly Plant being renovated in Ontario for Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US have resulted in layoffs of between 70 and 100 workers, union officials said Monday.

The layoffs have affected primarily millwrights, ironworkers and pipefitters, but officials with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers are concerned that more workers could be let go if the delays persist.

The renovation of about 80 per ent of the assembly area as well as the body shop relies on tooling steel to mount ceiling panels and other equipment for the installation of new machinery. Fiat Chrysler is spending more than $2 billion on the renovation along with the development of a new minivan.
