Steel Dynamics to expand bar product operations
Steel Dynamics Inc today announced plans to expand operations at its Bar Products mill in Pittsboro, Indiana.
The mill will be outfitted with additional processing and finishing operations for its SBQ (special-bar-quality) line of steel bars.
The $18 million facility with the capacity to process 160'000 tons of bar steel per year will start
production in March 2006. Operations will include turning, polishing, straightening, chamfering, and precision saw-cutting, as well as non-destructive testing services and heat-treating capabilities.
Glenn Pushis, VP and general manager of SDI's Bar Products Division, said, "The addition of these new processing services to our Pittsboro mill further enhances our ability to focus on high quality carbon and alloy SBQ bars. As we pursue future OEM contract business, we will now be able to compete more effectively, offering more options to help satisfy our customers' requirements."
SDI's Bar Products division produces steel bars used for industrial and
automotive applications. The mill currently has a workforce of 300, which will expand to about 355 with the opening of the new facility.
