Spanish Celsa in progress to restart Cardiff plant
As previously reported, Spanish group Celsa is announcing its plans to restart production this summer in Cardiff plant formerly owned by ASW. This decision was taken as a result of the detailed engineering review/survey carried out to study the exact situation of the South Wales plant and the UK rebar, section and merchant bar markets. As a conclusion of the surveys, it is determined that Celsa has enough confidence to restart the mill. Over the next couple of months, Celsa is reported to make environmental investments of about £1 million (approximately €1.45 million) in addition to the capital investments made on production equipment and the like. The investment will mainly be carried out in the melt shop, but Celsa is also applying for environmental and other permits in the UK. Reports reveal that Celsa will also need to make further investments over the next two or three years to achieve necessary productivity gains. It is expected that Celsa will restart the plant at the end of June, providing the market does not deteriorate drastically. If successful, they will produce the same product range as ASW that is rebar, merchant bar and wire rod with a total capacity of approximately 1.1million ton per annum.Spanish Celsa in progress to restart Cardiff plant
