Brazil's second largest steel producer Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) has placed an order with Austria-based giant engineering and plantmaking company Siemens VAI Metals Technologies (Siemens VAI) and Siemens Ltda. Brasil for the replacement of two LD converters at its Volta Redonda location. Turnkey delivery of the converters is planned during the summer of 2011 and at the end of 2012, respectively.
The city of Volta Redonda in the state of Rio de Janeiro is the most important location of Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional. It is also where the company has its headquarters and operates an integrated production complex with an annual capacity of 5.8 million metric tons of steel and steel products.
The steelworks' two 240-ton LD converters A and C have almost reached the end of their useful lives. Siemens had renewed converter B in July 2006. For the renewal of converters A and C, Siemens is supplying the required equipment. Siemens is also responsible for the basic and detailed engineering and commissioning.
Turnkey delivery of converter A is scheduled for August 2011, and converter C is due to be put into operation in December 2012.
CSN offers a wide range of steel products, including slabs, hot and cold rolled strip and also galvanized and tin plate. Its main customers are the domestic logistics, packaging, automotive and domestic appliance industries, as well as the building trade.
