The Peruvian steel producer Siderperu, controlled by the Brazilian group Gerdau, announced the start of operations of a solar power plant in its plant of Chimbote, in the central-north coast of the country.
The plant is an association of Siderperu and Enel, an energy producer. It is comprised of 900 solar panels, with a combined capacity of 500 kW, with an annual energy production capacity estimated at 850,000 kWh, sufficient to avoid the emission of 170 mt of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere every year.
According to Richard Cervantes, industrial manager of the company, the solar power plant will supply energy to the industrial water treatment plant and to some ancillary services including working offices.
With a crude steel capacity of 750,000 mt per year, the Chimbote plant produces a wide array of long steel products.
