Shipments from US steel mills up 5.9 percent in January

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported Wednesday that in January 2011, US steel mills shipped 7,528,655 net tons, a 5.9 percent increase from the 7,111,031 net tons steel mills shipped in December 2010. Compared to January 2010 steel mill shipments of 6,579,808, January 2011 shipments are up 14.4 percent.

Compared to December 2010, January 2011 shipments of cold rolled sheet were up 19 percent, hot dipped galvanized sheet and strip increased 14 percent and hot rolled sheet rose 5 percent.
