The Serbian government has announced that it has decided to temporarily lift its import tariffs on cold rolled and hot rolled steel sheets to provide relief for domestic companies which have started to experience difficulties regarding supplies of the said materials, due to the production halt at the Serbia-based Zelezara Smederevo steel mill.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, Serbia has lately launched a new tender to sell 75 percent of the Smederevo steel mill, the country's only steelmaking plant, with bids due to be submitted by October 26. Serbian economy minister Mlađan Dinkić had earlier stated that he expected production would be relaunched at the Smederevo plant by the end of the current year.

At the end of January this year, the Serbian government bought back the Smederevo plant (then called US Steel Serbia) from Pittsburg-based US Steel for a symbolic amount of $1.
