Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP), owned by Indian state-run steel producer Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), commenced production of hot rolled coil (HRC) last week from its newly installed hot strip mill (HSM) No. 2, a SAIL official said on Tuesday, February 4.

The HSM No. 2 had been installed entailing an investment to the tune of $422 million with a capacity of 3 million mt per annum, which would enable RSP to produce thinner gauge HRC with a thickness ranging from 1.2 mm to 25.4 mm and with width ranging between 725 mm and 2,150 mm.

Commercial production started last week within just two days of trial runs and the higher grade HRC will enable SAIL to significantly bolster its product range and market share, the official added.
