The South African Iron and Steel Institute (SAISI) has reported that in August 2007 the country produced 741,681 metric tons of crude steel - a 7.5 percent decrease compared to August 2006. Sales of primary carbon steel products to South Africa's domestic market decreased by 8.6 percent to 458,598 metric tons during the same period.
Meanwhile, exports of primary carbon steel products in August 2007 amounted to 187,260 metric tons, a decrease of 8.6 percent from a year earlier.
