Russia's Uralmash-Izhora Group (OMZ) has announced that its St. Petersburg-based subsidiary OMZ Special Steels has commenced the installation of the basic equipment for its new 120 metric ton electric arc furnace (EAF-120).

The EAF-120 construction project, started in 2007, is being implemented within the framework of OMZ's investment program, financed by Gazprombank.

The new EAF-120, delivered by German plantmaker SMS Demag, is designed to produce large size billets and will have an annual production capacity of 600,000 metric tons. The furnace is scheduled to start operations in the first quarter of 2009.
