The South Africa's National Union of Metalworkers (Numsa) has said it intends to stage a general strike in protest against the recent increase in steel prices carried out by Mittal Steel South Africa. The Numsa said in a statement that almost 94,000 jobs in the country's steel sector were threatened by Mittal's price increase which was aimed at boosting the company's profits. Last month's announcement by South Africa's biggest steel maker - which has over 80 percent of the local market - that it would raise prices on some of its products by 5-7.5 percent, has enraged Mittal Steel's customers and the South African government.
