The North Africa Arab Countries (NAAC) account for the largest share in Arab total crude steel production.
According to Arab Iron and Steel Union's (AISU) paper presented at the North African Steel Conference, held in Cairo, Egypt, on June 2-4, 2008, four Arab countries located in NAAC, with combined crude steel production of 9.4 million mt , accounted for a 55.3 percent share of a total Arab crude steel production in 2007, which was 17 million mt.
In 2007, NAAC almost doubled its crude steel production from 4.9 million mt to 9.2 million mt year on year.
Accordingly, in 2007 NAAC's output of long steel products amounted to 8.362 million mt, which is 41.33 percent of a total Arab production for the same year. Egypt accounted for 61.26 percent of NAAC's total longs production.
The flat steel production of NAAC, concentrated in Egypt, Libya and Algeria, was 3.263 million mt in 2007, accounting for 66.57 percent of a total Arab production. Egypt produced 66.44 percent of NAAC's total flat production.
