The Russian steelmaker Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK) has announced that it is continuing scheduled repair works at its third oxygen converter.

The repairs, which started in October 2008 and are expected to last for a total of 88 days, include the simultaneous replacement of the frame of the converter, of the mantle ring and of the cooling boiler. The converter No. 3 is scheduled to restart operations at the end of the current month.

MMK's third oxygen converter was put into operation in 1999 and allowed the mill to increase the annual capacity of its oxygen converter shop to 10 million mt of steel.

As SteelOrbis previously reported, in July 2008 MMK completed the overhaul of its second oxygen converter.
