Mechel, one of the leading Russian mining and steel groups, has launched the construction of a grinding-mixing complex for Portland blast-furnace slag cement production with 1.6 million mt capacity, held on the premises of its subsidiary Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant. The total investments are estimated at €110 million.

Accordingly, the new grinding-mixing complex, to be commissioned in Q2 2012, will be the first Russian facility producing high quality Portland blast-furnace slag cement of CEMIII/A grade. The main raw material will be blast furnace slag produced by Chelyabinsk Metallurgical Plant, which will result in non-waste production of pig iron at the facility.

Portland blast-furnace slag cement is widely used for production of reinforced concrete goods and constructions.

The general contractor is Austria-based FMW GmbH, while financing is provided by Unicredit (Austria) and Commerzbank Aktiengesellschaft (Germany).
