Latin American crude steel production decreases 5.2 percent in March

Latin America’s crude steel production decreased 5.2 percent in March, year-on-year, to 5.4 million mt, according to data released by the World Steel Association (worldsteel).

In a month-on-month basis, the region’s crude steel production showed some improvement, growing from 5 million mt in February to 5.4 million mt in March.

Crude steel production in the first quarter of 2015 was 16 million mt, 1.2 percent down, year-on-year, from 16.2 million mt in the same quarter of 2014.

Brazil and Mexico accounted for 81.2 percent of the region’s output. Together, the two countries produced 4.3 million mt of crude steel. In 2014, their combined share was 82.4 percent.
