A Chilean judge has postponed until March 14 a decision on whether Andes Iron’s Dominga iron ore project should remain halted.
Media reports said the country’s environmental court allowed Andes Iron and Chile’s environment authority, SEA, to consider a potential conciliation over the banned project.
SEA first rejected the project, followed by a ban from Coquimbo’s environmental commission. In August 2017, a minister council sustained the restrictions on the project.
Since then, Andes Iron has appealed the decision and promised to bring the case to higher courts in an effort to resume the project. Officials from the Chilean environmental court have recently inspected the project’s site, and if a deal is reached, Andes Iron may be able to resume the halted project.
The $2.5 billion project expects to produce up to 12 million mt of iron ore.
