Japan’s domestic steel consumption down 4.4 percent in 2024

In December last year, domestic steel product consumption in Japan amounted to 3.71 million metric tons, up by 4.0 percent compared to November and down by 5.4 percent year on year, according to the data released by the Japan Iron and Steel Association (JISF). Meanwhile, in 2024, domestic steel consumption in the country decreased by 4.4 percent year on year to 43.34 million metric tons.

In 2024, steel product consumption in the construction sector in Japan moved down by 6.1 percent to 8.32 million metric tons, while steel product consumption in the Japanese automotive sector amounted to 10.77 million metric tons, down 7.4 percent, both on year-on-year basis. In the given year, Japan’s shipbuilding industry consumed 2.89 million metric tons of steel products, up 0.9 percent compared to the previous year.
