Japanese iron ore imports down 2.6 percent in 2017

According to Japanese customs data, Japan, the second largest iron ore importer, decreased imports of iron ore by 2.6 percent year-over-year in 2017 to total 126.61 million mt, compared to 130.04 million mt in 2016.

During the first half of 2017, iron ore imports totaled 63.17 million mt compared to 64.23 million mt in the same period of 2016. This represented a reduction of 1.7 percent year-on-year, but in the second half of 2017, Japan imported 63.44 million mt compared to 65.82 million mt in the same period of 2016, representing a decline of 3.6 percent year-on-year.
