According to the statistics released by the Italian steel producers' association Federacciai, in the first four months of 2011 Italy's steel imports from non-European Union (EU) countries reached 3.55 million metric tons, increasing by 36.4 percent year on year, while its steel exports to non-EU destinations totaled 1.56 million metric tons, down 11.5 percent year on year.
In January-April this year, Italy's semi-finished steel product imports from non-EU countries reached 1.15 million metric tons, up two percent year on year. Meanwhile, the country's semi-finished steel products exports to countries outside the EU amounted to 59,000 metric tons, decreasing by 64 percent year on year.
In the given period, Italy's imports of long steel products from non-EU countries increased by 41.5 percent to 249,000 metric tons, while its long steel product exports to non-EU destinations totaled 448,000 metric tons, down 4.7 percent, both year on year.
On the other hand, in the first four months of 2011 Italy's flat steel product imports from non-EU sources reached 1.99 million metric tons, up 71.6 percent as compared to January-April 2010, while its flat steel product exports amounted to 534,000 metric tons, with a 20.1 percent decrease year on year.
