Italian scrap imports from non-EU markets rise 75 percent in 2010

According to the annual report of the Italian steel producers' association Federacciai, in 2010 total ferrous scrap demand from local steelmakers reached 18.042 million metric tons, with an increase of 23 percent compared to the previous year. Of this, 13.401 million metric tons were purchased in the domestic market, up 23 percent year on year, while 2.89 million metric tons came from other EU countries (up 18.6 percent year on year) and 1.892 million metric tons were imported from non-European countries, with a strong rise of 74.8 percent year on year.
