Indian state-run steel producer Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), a primarily long steel product manufacturer, will diversify into flat products in its next stage of expansion from 7.3 million mt to close to 10 million mt per year, company officials said on Wednesday, July 17.

The officials said that the steel company is currently consolidating and stabilizing its expansion project, ramping up its capacity from 6.3 million mt per year to 7.3 million mt per year as all project modules except for one have been completed.

Once the current expansion project has been consolidated, the project to take capacity up to 10 million mt per year will be undertaken with a sharp focus on including flat product manufacturing capacities which will ensure higher margins and profitability for RINL, the officials added.

In its current expansion phase, RINL has launched the commissioning of its coke oven battery No. 5 which will add an estimated 840,000 mt of blast furnace grade coke for RINL’s steel mill located in the southern Indian port town of Vishakhapatnam.
