Indian steel producers suffer from the restriction on scrap imports
As reported by SteelOrbis back in mid-October, the Indian government decided to restrict
scrap imports following the blast that took place at Bhusan Steel factory in Ghaziabad as a result of
scrap containers' containing explosives. The Union Government firstly imposed the restriction upon imports from war-ravaged countries, followed by a new decree which requires a pre-shipment inspection certificate for imports of all iron and steel
scrap.
As there is a shortage of availability of iron and steel
scrap in the country, most mills have been importing the subject raw material used in
steelmaking. However, with the new regulation, the fact that importing
scrap has become more costly has caused concern among steel producers in the country.
Now, the producers are demanding the government to take action to remedy the problem.
