Indian steel consumption rises 8.1 percent in April-November

According to the provisional data issued by the Indian Steel Ministry, in the April-November period of the current year India's steel consumption rose by 8.1 percent year on year to 35.97 million mt, due to demand from the automobile sector and the consumer durables sector, Indian resources reported.

In the same period Indian domestic steel production increased by three percent to 38.57 million mt, compared to 37.45 million mt in April-November 2008.

Meanwhile, the increased demand in Indian steel consumption was met by an 11 percent increase year on year in steel imports to 4.58 million mt, while exports dropped 39.4 percent to 1.78 million mt.

In April-November this year, Indian steelmakers Tata Steel and Rashtriya Ispat Nigam recorded respective year-on-year growths of 5.6 percent and 1.2 percent, to 3.25 million mt and 1.86 million mt.

In November this year, Indian steel production increased by 3.2 percent year on year to 5 million mt, while steel consumption rose 7.6 percent to 4.66 million mt.
