In a crackdown on sale and distribution of cheap and uncertified steel products, India's steel ministry has proposed setting up a designated authority with policing powers and making it mandatory for all steel product manufacturers to be registered with the Bureau of India Standards (BIS), a steel ministry official said on Wednesday, May 20.

The official said that a "designated authority under necessary legislations" will shortly be created and such an authority will be empowered to conduct search and seizures of cheap and uncertified steel products from stockyards of steel producers and market intermediaries across the country.

All steel producers have been directed to get each of their steel products registered with BIS and all products adhering to specifications will carry the "BIS certified" mark, the official added.

The list of steel products to be mandatorily registered with BIS has been expanded to include carbon steel wire rods, galvanized sheets and coils, and metallic coated steel strips and sheets.
