The Indian government has created a fund of $55 million to fund and support research and development (R&D) in the use of hydrogen in green steel production, a statement issued by India’s ministry of steel said on Monday, June 5.

The ministry of steel has invited proposals from various stakeholders on creating pilot projects for the use of hydrogen in green steel production, which would be eligible for funding support from the government.

The selected R&D projects need to be based around hydrogen-based direct reduction iron (DRI) making, redesigning of electric arc furnaces (EAFs) where hydrogen-based DRI can be used, adaptation of existing DRI plants, and design, technology and machinery modification if hydrogen needs to be used in blast furnaces.
