Following the announcement of the introduction of export duty on certain steel products by the Indian Ministry of Finance on April 29, some of the Indian steel producers engaged in the manufacturing of value added steel products have asked the government to exempt certain coated steel from the new export duty.
The steel producers in question have represented that the export duty on cold rolled, galvanized and coated sheets as well as on pipes and tubes, the input material of which is procured through import of hot rolled coils under the Advance Licensing Scheme, should be freed from the purview of the proposed export duty. This matter has been taken up with the Indian Department of Revenue for consideration.
