Global crude steel production for August 2007

Data released by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) show that global crude steel production for August 2007 rose 5.3 percent year on year to 108.1 million metric tons. 

China is again the largest steel producing country with crude steel production of 41.6 million metric tons in August, an increase of 13.6 percent from a year earlier. Total production in the Asian region amounted to 61.3 million metric tons, up 9.5 percent on a year ago. 

Germany produced four million metric tons of crude steel in August 2007, showing a 2.5 percent increase year on year. Italy registered a crude steel output for August 2007 of 1.6 million metric tons, down 11 percent on the figure for August 2006. France produced 1.2 million metric tons, an increase of 3.9 percent compared to the same month in 2006. Production in the UK was 1.1 million metric tons, 2.7 percent lower than August 2006. Total production in the EU-15 amounted to 12.4 million, up 1.6 percent on a year ago.

Brazil produced 2.9 million metric tons of crude steel in August 2007, an increase of 4.5 percent compared to August 2006.

Turkey's crude steel production in August rose 4.3 percent year on year to two million metric tons. Total production in the Other Europe region was 2.4 million metric tons, an increase of 0.6 percent year on year. 

The USA produced an estimated 8.5 million metric tons in August 2007, registering a 3.5 percent decrease year on year.
