Global crude steel output for July 2005
China made up for stagnant growth in steel output around the world in July by posting a strong year-on-year gain in production. China's 28.6 percent year-on-year growth in crude steel production in July helped pushed worldwide growth to 4.5 percent. Without China, global steel production grew a miniscule 0.02 percent. Data released by the International Iron and Steel Institute (IISI) show that global crude steel production amounted to 90.3 million metric tons (mmt) in July 2005. For the first seven months of the year, global crude steel production rose 6.9 percent year on year to 636.2 mmt. China, with production of 29.2 mmt of crude steel in July, was again the largest crude steel producing country. Year-to-date production reached 193.8 mmt, up 28.1 percent from a year earlier. China's steel output is expected to reach 330 million tons this year, or 60 million tons more than 2004. European crude steel production shows a decline due to the summer holidays. Crude steel production in Germany fell 10.4 percent year on year to 3.5 mmt. The UK produced 1.0 mmt of crude steel in July, 9.4 percent lower than July 2004. Crude steel production in the US fell 9.1 percent year on year to 7.6 mmt in July. For the first seven months of the year, total production also dropped 4.7 percent year on year to 54.5 mmt.Global crude steel production (in thousands of metric tons) July June July %change 7 months 2005 2005 2004 July-05/04 2005 2004 %change Other Europe 2.347 2.393 2.428 -3.3 16.562 16.600 -0.2 EU (15) 12.756 13.433 13.736 -7.1 97.670 99.153 -1.5 EU (25) 14.406 15.117 15.905 -9.4 110.625 114.083 -3.0 C.I.S 8.400 8.129 9.376 -10.4 63.466 64.677 -1.9 N.America 10.199 9.834 11.170 -8.7 74.278 77.067 -3.6 S.America 3.696 3.673 3.982 -7.2 26.415 26.370 0.2 Africa 1.550 1.508 1.404 10.4 10.491 9.461 10.9 MiddleEast 1.211 1.195 1.125 7.6 8.460 7.829 8.1 Asia 47.771 47.049 40.413 18.2 320.911 274.039 17.1 Ocenia 740 716 632 17.1 5.009 4.902 2.2 Total 61 90.320 89.614 86.436 4.5 636.216 595.027 6.9 countries
