Finland-based stainless steel producer Outokumpu has announced that it will build a high-quality biocarbon production plant in Germany, entailing an investment of €40 million.

Accordingly, the plant, which will be constructed in Sassnitz in northeastern Germany, will benefit from the existing infrastructure and buildings at Mukran port in Sassnitz. Mukran port is an ideal location with logistical connections both to Finland and central Europe.

Having a biocarbon production capacity of 15,000 mt per year using waste wood as raw material, it will provide biocoke for Outokumpu’s pelletizing plant in Tornio which is expected to be put into operation in mid-2025. Using biocoke as a replacement for fossil coke, the Finnish producer will be able cut its direct emissions by about 50 percent. The biocarbon plant is schooled for start-up in the first half of 2026.
