Europe’s August construction output down 0.5 percent over July

According to the data released by Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities, in August this year seasonally adjusted production in the construction sector decreased by 0.5 percent month on month in the European Union member states (EU-27), while a drop of 11 percent was recorded compared to August 2008. In July, production in the construction sector in the EU-27 had fallen by 0.5 percent month on month.

Among the member states for which data are available for August 2009, construction output rose in five states and fell in seven, compared to July. The highest monthly increases were registered in Germany at 4.2 percent, in Slovakia at 3.6 percent and in Sweden at 2.9 percent. The largest decreases were seen in Romania at 7.9 percent, in Bulgaria at 3.6 percent, and in Spain and France, both at 1.6 percent.

In August this year, the construction output rose in four and fell in eight member states compared to August 2008, among the member states for which data are available. The highest year-on-year increases were registered in Poland at 9.9 percent, in Sweden at 9.5 percent and in Germany at 1.9 percent, while the largest decreases were seen in Romania at 29 percent, in Spain at 21.1 percent and in Slovenia at 19.6 percent.

In August, building construction output in the EU-27 decreased by 0.7 percent month on month and was down 15 percent compared to August 2008, while civil engineering output increased by three percent over July, and was up 5.2 percent year on year.
