According to EU trade commissioner Cecilia Malmström, it is not clear yet what the Trump administration wants in return for an exemption for the EU from US tariffs on steel and aluminum. "We are still in doubt", she said during a visit to Copenhagen, while adding that she is having "regular discussions" with US commerce secretary Wilbur Ross.
The US launched a Section 232 investigation in April 2017, resulting in the decision in March this year to impose a 25 percent duty on all steel and aluminum imports, with temporary exemptions - until May 1 - for Canada, Mexico, South Korea, Australia, Brazil, Argentina and the EU countries.
