EU quota utilization levels of Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan

In the first four months of 2008, Russia utilized 28.3 percent of the steel quota allocated to it by the European Union (EU), while Ukraine utilized 34.4 percent of its EU quota. On the other hand, Kazakhstan utilized 29.6 percent of its allocation.

According to the latest statistics, Russia exported a total of 857,538 tons of steel products to the EU in the first four months of 2008. The quota allocated to Russia for 2008 is 3,031,000 tons.

Specifically, Russia used 31.89 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (330,024 of 1,035,090 allotted tons), 33.31 percent of its plate quota (91,614 of 275,000 allotted tons), 12.71 percent of its alloy sheet quota (13,348 of 105,000 allotted tons), and 15.96 percent of its wire rod quota (51,698 of 324,000 allotted tons).

With regard to Ukraine, it exported a total of 464,832 tons of steel products to the EU in the January-April 2008 period, filling 34.4 percent of its revised quota of 1,353,000 tons for 2008.

When the figures are broken down, we see that Ukraine filled 23.56 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (45,887 of 194,750 allotted tons), 33.7 percent of its heavy plate quota (134,700 of 399,750 allotted tons), 41.35 percent of its beam quota (21,191 of 51,250 allotted tons), and 49.66 percent of its wire rod quota (99,264 of 199,875 allotted tons).

Finally, Kazakhstan exported a total of 60,572 tons of steel products to the EU in the first four months of 2008, filling 29.6 percent of its total quota of 205,000 tons for the current year.

Specifically, Kazakhstan filled 18.28 percent of its hot rolled coil quota (15,929 of 87,125 allotted tons), and 37.87 percent of its quota for other flat rolled products (44,642 of 117,875 allotted tons).
