The European Union may introduce a change in its current quotas for imports of Russian steel in the event of the Russian government deciding to implement a strong increase in its export duty on scrap, the chairman of the Russian Ministry of Economic Development and Trade (MEDT) Viktor Kalmikov has anticipated in a report about the possible consequences of the proposed increase in Russia's scrap export duty.

The EU may unilaterally change the current quota regime in steel trade with Russia by reducing the current quota level or even refusing to prolong the agreement and instead introduce autonomous quotas, which will solely depend on the wishes of the European Union states. According to Mr. Kalmikov, this is one of the possible outcomes if the Russian government introduces a proposed increase in the country's export duty on scrap, a move which the MEDT chairman says will not bring desirable results.
