The European Metalworkers' Federation (EMF), the representative body defending the interests of workers in the European metal industry, is calling for workers and subcontractors at the global steel giant ArcelorMittal to support and take part in coordinated actions such as strikes, work stoppages and demonstrations to take place on December 7.

In its statement, the EMF urged workers and subcontractors to protest against "the plant closures, restructuring plans and job cuts which threaten the long-term viability of Europe's leading steelmaker. They will be protesting against the company's current strategy and calling on it to make alternative investment decisions that guarantee the future development of the company and jobs."

As SteelOrbis previously reported, ArcelorMittal has recently permanently closed its liquid phase steel production location in Liege, Belgium, temporarily halted production at a mill in Poland, idled a blast furnace in both Germany and France, while it has also idled an electric arc furnace and two rolling mills in Luxembourg and an electric arc furnace in Spain.
