Izmir-based Ege Celik has revealed to SteelOrbis that it plans to produce 550,000 mt of rebar at its new mill which is currently under construction, thereby adding to its current overall annual production capacity of 450,000 mt of wire rod (5,5-18 mm) and rebar (8-32 mm). In addition, the new mill which is being supplied by Italian company NCO is to be commissioned by February 2008, with rebar diameters to be in the range of 8-32 mm.

Following the commissioning of the new mill, Ege Celik's total annual production capacity will increase to one million mt, with the company aiming to produce 450,000 mt of wire rod and 550,000 mt of rebar. However, the company said that the respective shares of wire rod and rebar in its overall capacity could be altered according to the market conditions.

To date Ege Celik has been using roughly 74 percent (around 1.4 million mt) of its annual crude steel production capacity of 1.9 million mt. Allocating 500,000 mt of this capacity for longs, Ege Celik has been supplying 70 percent of the remaining 900,000 mt of billet (100-200 mm) to the domestic markets and 30 percent internationally, in particular to Europe and the Middle East. Once the new mill becomes operative, Ege Celik plans to work at full capacity, which will enable it to continue selling 900,000 mt of billets to the domestic and international markets.
