Camacero, Colombia’s steel chamber, said this week it expects local steel consumption to grow 4 percent in 2018, on a year-on-year basis, according to a media report from El Universal.

According to Camacero, Colombia’s steel consumption growth should be driven by local infrastructure projects and private investments, including the nation’s 4G infrastructure project. Overall, the projects are expected to add 150,000 mt to the nation’s domestic steel consumption this year. In 2017, Colombia consumed 3.5 million mt of steel.

Colombia imports about two thirds of the steel it consumes. The local steel industry produced 1.4 million mt of steel in 2017, according to Camacero estimates.
