The Coke Industry Association in Changzhi in China's Shanxi Province has proposed that local coking enterprises should maintain low inventories at present. Furthermore, it also suggests that offers for metallurgical coke should be raised by RMB 30-50/mt ($5-8/mt) for downstream users.
In 2010, of the 189 normally operating coking enterprises in Shanxi Province, 133 enterprises incurred losses, recording an aggregate loss of RMB 3.15 billion ($496 million).
During the first 11 months of 2011, coke production in the province totaled 82.68 million mt, accounting for 21.06 percent of China's total coke output. On October 25, the Coking Industry Association of Shanxi had appealed to all local coking enterprises to curb production by 30-50 percent.
