CMC opens new scrap plant in Alabama

Commercial Metals Co. has unveiled its newest scrap metal plant in Birmingham, Ala. The new plant will be called CMC Birmingham. Its primary function will be to supply CMC's minimill, SMI Steel-Alabama, also located in Birmingham, with processed scrap. The plant will also function as one of CMC's domestic mills. The CMC Steel Group companies are located from California to Virginia, with concentrations in Texas and the Southeast. The CMC Steel Group is headquartered at SMI-Texas in Seguin, near San Antonio. The company employs more than 10'000 and posted $6.32 billion revenue in 2004.
