In accordance with the stated aim of China's State Council to further boost the elimination of backward production capacities, the Chinese provincial-level municipality of Chongqing has set the following targets for the elimination of out-of-date capacities in various sectors in 2010: namely, the elimination of 400,000 mt of iron-making capacity, 150,000 mt of steelmaking capacity, 2 million mt of cement production capacity, and 127,500 kW of small thermal power units, just to mention a few sectors.

Chongqing has also reported its achievements to date in eliminating disqualified capacities. Up to the end of last year, the municipality had already eliminated 7.584 million mt of disqualified cement production capacity, 26.4 percent more than the set aim, equivalent to a reduction in energy consumption of 1.21 million mt of standard coal and a reduction in emissions of 39,000 mt of CO2. Meanwhile, Chongqing also eliminated 370,600 kW of small thermal power units up to the end of last year, equivalent to a reduction in energy consumption of 1.9 million mt of coal and to a reduction in emissions of 45,000 mt of CO2. In addition, 3.5 million mt of obsolete steelmaking capacities were eliminated up to the end of 2009.
