In the first three quarters of 2007, China's stainless steel exports increased 92.47 percent or 469,844 mt to 977,934.61 mt, compared with the corresponding period of 2006. Of this export figure, stainless sheet/coil accounted for 794,566.306 mt, up 494,634 mt or 164.92 percent from the same period of last year. This stainless sheet/coil export total includes 489,691.417 mt of CR stainless sheet/coil, representing an increase of 230,972 mt or 89.27 percent year on year, and also 304,873 mt of HR stainless sheet/coil, up 236,295 mt or 344.56 percent.
During the first nine months of 2007, China's stainless steel imports slid downward. The total stainless import figure was 1,627,328 mt, down 278,749 mt or 14.62 percent from the same period of last year. This total includes 1,089,712 mt of stainless steel coil/sheet, down 562,215 mt or 34.03 percent from the corresponding period of 2006. CR sheet/coil imports declined by 79,395 mt or 13.73 percent year on year to 498,682 mt, while HR sheet/coil imports dropped by 493,454 mt or 45.50 percent to 591,029 mt.
Based on the above figures, net stainless steel imports for the period in question amounted to 649,393 mt, including 295,145.59 mt of stainless sheet/coil. Meanwhile, net CR stainless sheet/coil imports were 8,991 mt, while net HR stainless sheet/coil imports totaled 286,156 mt.
