China exported 42,019 mt of pig iron in August 2007, down from 151,383 mt in August 2006 and from 45,118 mt in July 2007.

Meanwhile the total export figure for January-August 2007 is at a high level of 511,481 mt, up 44 percent from the 354,574 mt registered for the same period last year.

In August, China exported 20,623 mt of pig iron to Japan, 16,180 mt to Taiwan, and 3,585 mt to South Korea.

Total pig iron exports throughout January-August 2007 from China to Japan reached 428,144 mt, while those to South Korea reached 39,559 mt, with 16,180 mt exported to Taiwan.

China's strong exports of pig iron to Japan earlier in the year have contributed to the high levels of pig iron prices in the Chinese domestic market.
