China’s domestic coal prices still on the way up

Coal prices in China have continued to rise at the start of November. As of November 3, domestic coal prices increased by RMB 30-50/mt ($4.5-7.5/mt) as compared to the end of October, recording the highest levels since February this year. Meanwhile, all main three international indexes for steam coal have also continued to move up, with steam coal prices at Australia's Newcastle port again exceeding $100/mt, reaching $100.48/mt.

As of October 29, at the eastern Chinese port of Qinhuangdao, the price (including VAT, FOB Trimmed) of Shanxi Datong quality mix of 6,000 kcal/kg, 5,000 kcal/kg and 5,500 kcal/kg indicated increases of RMB 50-845/mt ($7.5-127/mt) or 6.29 percent, RMB 695/mt ($123/mt) or 7.75 percent and RMB 55-795/mt ($8-119/mt) or 7.43 percent respectively, all compared to the previous month. In addition, the prices at Qinhuangdao port on October 29 (including VAT, FOB Trimmed) of blended coal (4,500 kcal/kg) had increased by RMB 615/mt ($92/mt) or 8.85 percent, with the price of blended coal (4,000 kcal/kg) up by RMB 42.5-495/mt ($20-74/mt) or 9.39 percent, both compared to the previous month.
