Chilean iron ore producer CAP Mineria has agreed to invest $30.7 million to address pending environmental issues at its Huasco iron ore mine, the company said.

The nation’s environmental protection agency, SMA, said CAP Mineria was polluting the ocean while operating a pellet tailings deposit system near the Huasco area.

CAP Mineria agreed to no longer release mining tailings from its pellet plant. The producer said it has already started studies to move and store the product on soil.

As a result, it will also need to shut down its Chapaco Bay tailings deposit.
