Canadian scrap exports up 25 percent in first eight months

According to customs data, Canada exported 3.35 million mt of ferrous scrap in the first eight months of 2018. Canada exported 0.49 million mt in August and 2.86 million mt of ferrous scrap in the first seven months of 2018. The eight-month figure is about 25 percent higher than the close to 2.68 million mt of ferrous scrap exported in the same period the previous year.

The largest destinations were the US with 2.20 million mt (66 percent) followed by Turkey with 0.60 million mt (18 percent). Canada exported 0.12 million mt (4 percent) to Mexico, 0.10 million mt to Brazil (3 percent), 0.08 million mt to Taiwan (2 percent), 0.06 million mt to both Bangladesh and India (2 percent each), and 0.13 million mt (4 percent) to other destinations in the eight-month period.
