UK-based premium steel manufacturer British Steel has announced that it has won two multi-million pound rail supply contracts with Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), which operates the railway infrastructure in Italy.
Under the terms of the contracts, British Steel will supply 86,000 mt of rail including 68,000 mt of standard grade rail and 18,000 mt of premium heat-treated SF350 rails to Italian railways.
British Steel will produce the 18,000 mt of stress-free heat-treated rail at its Scunthorpe plant, while the 68,000 mt of standard grade rail will be produced elsewhere.
As SteelOrbis previously reported, in September this year British Steel announced that Network Rail, owner and infrastructure manager of Britain’s main railway network, extended its contract with the company for two years. Then in October, Belgian railway infrastructure manager Infrabel inked a four-year network renewal agreement with British Steel.
“For each of our agreements with RFI, Network Rail and Infrabel, we’ve had to go through a rigorous tendering process, so these contracts are excellent demonstrations of our ability to provide first class products and services in highly competitive markets,” British Steel’s commercial director Rail Richard Bell said.
