The Brazilian Lower House of the Congress, the Chamber of Deputies, has approved a project that toughens requirements for the safety of dams, SteelOrbis has learned.

Policymakers will ban upstream dams like the one in Brumadinho that collapsed and killed 259 people. They also voted to increase fines to up to BRL 1 billion ($175.6 million).

Brazilian miners have until February 2022 to decommission all upstream dams, including iron ore dams, like the collapsing one in Brumadinho.

Under the terms of the project approved by policymakers, companies will be required to file an emergency action plan (PAE).
